Obituary for Phyllis Javene (Schnuelle) Engelman

Phyllis Javene Schnuelle Engelman, age 88, of Jansen passed away on Saturday July 27, 2019. She was born on November 3, 1930 at the Mennonite Hospital in Beatrice Nebraska to Frank Henry Schnuelle and Leona Gertrude Petsch Schnuelle. She was baptized on November 27, 1930 by Rev. P.S. Kohler at Hope Evangelical and Reformed Church of rural Harbine, Nebraska. She was confirmed on May 28, 1944 by Rev. Otto Pinckert of Hope Church. She attended rural School District 11 for 8 years and graduated from Diller High School in 1948.

On September 23, 1951 Phyllis was united in marriage to Dale Engelman. The marriage service was held
at Hope Church and was performed by Rev. Otto Pinckert. This union in marriage was blessed by our
Lord with the birth of seven children.

Phyllis was a rural school teacher for 3 years before her marriage to Dale. She was a member of the
Hope Church of Harbine and the United Church of Christ of Diller until its closing. She was an officer of
the church and women's fellowship, was a Sunday School teacher and an organist of the church since
she was 16 years old. Following the closing of the Diller Church she was a faithful member of the
Presbyterian Church of Beatrice until she was no longer able to attend.

She and Dale farmed north of Diller where they raised registered Holstein dairy cows. She enjoyed the
farming and dairying all 43 years of her married life. She was by Dale's side through the years - doing
whatever it took to take care of the cows, work in the fields, tend to the gardens and then make sure
seven children were taken care of and loved. Phyllis was an amazing Mother and Wife. She was the first
lady to be awarded with the Honorary Chapter Degree from the Diller FFA Chapter. She was a 4-H
leader for 19 years as she loved working with young people on all levels in 4-H.

Phyllis loved many things but first and foremost, were her children, grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. She attended as many sporting, music and other school events as she could. She made
sure that she attended each child's events - never wanting to make one feel less important than
another. She made many trips to Lincoln, Omaha, Wyoming, Colorado and all around eastern Nebraska.

She had many other interests - most notably gardening, flowers, old cars, traveling and of course,
quilting. She was often asked to give tours of her beautiful gardens and flowers. She was known for
picking up flowers, rocks and other various gardening trinkets during her many travels. She loved cars
and especially getting her red BMW Convertible ready for car shows. She was proud of the many
trophies she won at the shows.

Her quilt making ability was renowned in the community. She had always sewn clothes during her life,
but just became interested in quilting after Dale passed away. She became a master quilter and made t-
shirt quilts for every grandchild for their high school graduation. She also made other special quilts for
every grandchild's wedding and every great-grandchild's birth. She made sure she had a quilt for
everyone - there are even quilts made for those that are not yet married. Her life was full of this type of
foresight and thoughtfulness.

She entered the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, Nebraska in November of 2017 and resided there until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dale and by her parents, Frank and Leona Schnuelle,
her brother and sister-in-law Lyle and Donna Schnuelle, her younger brother Gail Schnuelle and her
grandson-in-law Justin Reynolds.

She is survived by her seven children, Neil (Conni) of Davey, Nebraska, Gary (Gay) of Hua Hin, Thailand,
Dean (Ann) of Diller, Nebraska, Lois (Randy) Huff of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Gail (Brenda) of Harbine,
Nebraska, Levi (Charlene) of Beatrice, Nebraska and Eric (Kathy) of Diller, Nebraska. She is also survived
by 17 grandchildren, Brent (Erin) Engelman, Stacy (Cory) Wittstruck, Cara (Mike) Bassinger, Goh Chainet, Adam (Brooke) Engelman, Evan (Felicia) Engelman, Amie (Eric) Hackler, Alex Huff, Austin Huff, Kendra (D.J.) Thompson, Kelsey (Aaron) Brittain, Clay (Amber) Engelman, Stephanie (Tyler) Ellis, Megan (Jon) Overbeck, Amber (Ty) Velasquez, Cody Engelman and Cory Engelman. She is also survived by 18 great
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church of Beatrice with Rev. Zac Wolfe and Chaplain Sharon Schuster officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 A.M. on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at the Hope Church Cemetery of rural Harbine following the luncheon. A memorial has been established to the Hope Church Cemetery of rural Harbine or the Jefferson County 4-H Council. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Monday and then one hour preceding the service at the church on Tuesday.
