Obituary for Doris June Vorderstrasse

Doris J. Vorderstrasse was born August 13, 1926 on a farm in rural Holmesville, in Gage County, Nebraska. She was the only daughter born to Mark and Hanna Petersen. She was baptized on November 21, 1926 and was confirmed on April 9, 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church. As a child growing up with brothers, Merlin and Marvin, one of her favorite memories was driving to Kansas and Colorado to visit family. She attended Riverview Consolidated School in Holmesville, NE and graduated at the age of 16 in 1943. After graduating, Doris worked at Store Kraft in Beatrice, NE. She married Leonard Johnsen, also of Holmesville, in 1946. Leonard and Doris established their first household on a farm southeast of Beatrice. While living on this farm, they welcomed their first five children. They found time to go to dances. In 1957 they moved to another farm on the same section of land and had two more children. Doris drew up the floor plans for a major renovation and addition to the house to better meet the needs of their growing family. Doris's parents lived just on the next section and hence were very connected in day to day events of the family. Doris became a member of a neighborhood women's club. She rarely missed her club days. The family attended Filley American Lutheran Church. In 1968, Doris started working at Formfit in Beatrice, and later became the bookkeeper at Tractor Supply. The farm expanded in size and scope of production, eventually becoming known as Gold Top Dairy. Doris and Leonard managed all facets of the dairy along with their sons Leonard Jr. and Darrell until Leonard's sudden death in 1985. In 1988, Doris was introduced to Neal Zimmerman. They were married in 1989 and Doris moved to Lincoln. With both being retired, they enjoyed traveling, bowling, and sharing in the events of their families. Neal's mom and Doris's mom died 2 days apart in 2000. In 2004, Doris lost her oldest son Leonard Jr. to cancer. She had traveled with him to Mayo Clinic and could see he was losing the battle with cancer. She helped her other kids deal with the loss of their brother. Later that year, Doris married Elmer Vorderstrasse. Both had lost two spouses, but both were still eager to love and be loved. Elmer died in 2012. She moved to Papillion in 2013. She continued to enjoy any opportunity to be with her kids and grandkids. After turning 90, she moved into assisted living at the Hillcrest Grand Lodge in Papillion. She enjoyed attending church there, reading in the afternoons, and many visits and phone calls with family. Doris's life was focused on her family. She never failed providing whatever was needed, loving each one fiercely, and relentlessly worrying about the struggles they faced daily. As a result her children and their families will be wrapped in her glowing pride and unconditional love for all eternity.

Doris was preceded in death by husbands, Leonard Johnsen Sr., Neal Zimmerman, and Elmer Vorderstrasse, parents Mark and Hanna Petersen, brother Merlin Petersen, and son Leonard Johnsen Jr. She is survived by daughters Linda Horton (Emery), Cheryl Oswald (Jerry), Nancy Wilson (Rick), Theresa McGovern (Mike), Pam Johnsen (Robert Wilson), and son Darrell Johnsen (Mary), daughter-in-law Sue Marquart (Allan), 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces, and step-children.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice. Burial will be in the Blue Springs Cemetery of Blue Springs. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home on Friday from 12:00 noon to 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established to the family for future designation. www.foxfuneralhome.net Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice is in charge of the arrangements.
