Obituary for Bonnie Bednar

Bonnie Marie Rhoads Bednar, 89, of Beatrice and Wymore was born to Harry and Mabel Rhoads in New Cambria, Kansas on November 9, 1929. She went to her heavenly home on August 31, 2019 with her loving family surrounding her. Bonnie lost her parents at an early age and was lovingly raised by Opal and Raymond Johnson. She was a 1948 graduate of Beatrice High School and like many women of her generation, went to work as an operator for the telephone company. She married Joseph Bednar, Jr. of Wymore on December 8, 1950. To this union, six children were born. The early years of their marriage found her enjoying life in Florida as an Air Force bride—her first child being born at Eglin Air Force Base at Fort Walton. They returned to Nebraska where Bonnie and Joe grew their family. Bonnie excelled at motherhood and later began serving the children of others through her work at the Beatrice State Developmental Center. Even being a woman of meager means, and six children of her own, Bonnie warmly welcomed children from BSDC into her home for weekends of cookie baking and a sense of family. Bonnie was an excellent cook, baker, and delighted many with her quilting, needlework and crocheting. She loved sharing those gifts with her children and grandchildren. Later in life, after her children were grown, she immensely enjoyed years as a Foster Grandparent. She had so much love to share and found great joy spending time with children. Her greatest joy throughout her life was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bonnie was a fun lover. She participated in the Red Hat Society, was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Beatrice, and loved a good joke. She was an avid reader, passing that love on to her children, and enjoyed her daily walks.

Survivors include her children, Diane (Larry) Tegtmeier of Lincoln, Clark (Carol) Bednar of Raymond, Mike (Bobbie Spanier) Bednar of Holton, Kansas, Dr. Nancy (Tim) Bond of Omaha, Judy (Larry) Hagemeier of DeWitt, and Scott (Dee) Bednar Of Wymore; 16 grandchildren, Traci (Adam) Nielsen, Shaun (Lorie) Saathoff, Stephanie (Brian) McKinney, Lindi (Brock) Johnson, Shanna Johnson, Cathi (Matt) Cotton, Travis (Staci) Bednar, Kelsi (Stephen) Shay, Jacob (Kylee Fulton) Bednar, Lucas Bond, Olivia Bond, Spencer (Ellen) Hagemeier, Brielle (John) Langley, Colton Bednar, Caleb Bednar, and Chaysen Bednar; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Bonnie Jo Felt, Penny Downs, and Shirley Sveen; nephews, JoAlan Clark and David Rhoads. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Acie, Faye, Myrtle, Harry, Mary Margaret, Leonard, Frank, Kenny, Anita, Ed, Archie, and a grandchild, Angela Owen.
