Obituary for Viola "VI" Grace Kimmerling

Viola “Vi” Grace Kimmerling, 89 of Beatrice passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was all things: loving, strong, attentive, fair, interested, and the most beautiful girl Max Kimmerling, her husband of 69 years had ever seen.

Vi was born January 7, 1929 near Filley, Nebraska and was baptized in the home of her parents Dirk and Mary Wallman on January 28, 1929. In her early years of life, Vi was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was confirmed in the faith on April 18, 1943 at St. John Lutheran Church. She attended the Hanover Township area rural school and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1946.

Vi was a hard and diligent worker. While in high school she worked at the soda fountain at Hested Store and then at A&T Drug Store. Following graduation she found work at the Elgin Watch Factory in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was during this time Vi met Max Kimmerling. The two were married on December 26, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church and moved to a farm north of Beatrice.

An active member of the community, Vi taught Sunday and Bible school, was a member of the Ladies’ Circle and Trinity Church Council. She believed in charity and worked with Meals on Wheels and quilted for world relief organizations. She organized the Mount Olive girls 4-H Club and was a 4-H leader for many years. Throughout her life, she traveled with Max and was active in local dairy promotion. Vi was also awarded the honor of becoming president of the National Milking Shorthorn Auxiliary. She could make a stranger a friend faster than anyone.

Vi was a teacher, but instead of a classroom, she taught generations in her home. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would huddle around her sewing table learning how to piece together fabrics for a quilt. She was more patient than anyone could understand as wiggly children struggled to sew a straight line and begged for Vi to teach them other skills like playing cards and Chinese checkers. Favorite among all of her many talents was her baking.

Each of Vi’s grandchildren learned how to mix just the right amount of flour, sugar and ever important chocolate chips to make cookies for Grandpa Max. Vi taught her disciples about the birds who visited her yard and the flowers she tended to in her garden. Purple is the color donned by the beautiful viola flower, and it was Vi’s favorite color as well. She will be missed dearly by her family, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her husband, Max of Beatrice; two sons, Paul Kimmerling and wife Cheryl and Kevin Kimmerling and wife Annette all of Beatrice; two daughters, Linda Kopp and husband John of Raymond and Kathy Strouf and husband Daryl of Swanton; one daughter-in-law, Beth Kimmerling-Dumler and husband Dean Dumler of Lincoln; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Kramer and Janice Lampe and husband Gerald all of Beatrice; one brother-in-law, Melvin Miller of Pickrell; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dirk "Dick” and Mary Miller Wallman; two sons, Kent Kimmerling and wife Kandy and Phil Kimmerling; one son-in-law, Terry Jensen; one sister, Rosetta Miller; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Muriel Kimmerling; two brothers-in-law, Weldon and wife Marion Kimmerling and George Kramer.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Greg Gabriel and Pastor Leah Lawson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice at 10:00 A.M. Saturday. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 A.M. on Saturday in the chapel of the church.
