Obituary for Kenneth D. Ruhnke

Kenneth D. Ruhnke, 89, of Beatrice died at Beatrice Health and Rehab on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. He was born July 6, 1928 at Jansen, attended Jansen Public School and then attended and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1945. He was in the United States Army and served in the military police battalion. After his discharge, he lived in Chicago and worked for Lakeside Press in the accounting department. He married Dorothy Drewes at Fairbury on September 17, 1948. They lived in Chicago before moving back to Beatrice in 1950. He began working at Store Kraft on the loading docks and then moved up to accounting, vice-president/treasurer and president. After his retirement, he served on the Store Kraft Board of Directors. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beatrice and served as the Treasurer of the Presbyterian Church Corporation and was a ruling elder for 4.5 terms. He was a member of the Midwest Aerobatics Club, Air Lifeline, Civil Air Patrol, Antique Airplane Association and one of the founding members of the Flying Conestoga’s. He had received the Aerobatics Achievement Award and had received his commercial pilot license for take off and landing on land and water. They also owned and operated the Steeple House in Beatrice during the 1980’s. He was a member of Bitting-Norman Post #27 of the American Legion of Beatrice, Beatrice Optimist Club, Aerie #531, F.O.E., Fairbury Elks Club, and was a former member and president of the Beatrice Jaycees and had become a national director. He was also a member of the Bear Creek Motorcycle Club of Beatrice.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Ruhnke of Beatrice; one daughter, Linda Mancosu of Lincoln; one grandson, Tony Mancosu and wife Myndi of Lincoln; three great-grandchildren, Joey, Joshua and Leci Mancosu; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinhold and Marie Clara Koenig Ruhnke; one brother, Richard Ruhnke and wife Mary; four sisters, Helen Rahe and husband Fernie, Louise Schulz and husband Pete, Phyllis (Fiz) Coleman and husband Jim and Marilyn Pleis and husband Joe.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Beatrice with Rev. Dr. John Duling officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 P.M. at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. A memorial has been established to the family’s choice. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 12:00 noon Thursday until 11:00 A.M.
