Obituary for George A. Lampe

George A. Lampe, 95, of Beatrice died in Fairbury on Thursday, August 31, 2017.  He was born May 28, 1922 at Orleans and moved with his family to Beatrice as a child.  He attended Beatrice High School and in 1941, he joined the United States Navy where he was a gunner’s first mate on the USS Hopkins  DMS 13 in the South Pacific for four years.  He was the first person from Beatrice  to be shipped out for World War II and is the last survivor of the USS Hopkins.   After his discharge, he married Leila Broadstone in Diller.  He worked for Bunny Bread/Wilke Baking Company, Metz Baking Company and was an original investor of Grandma  Fruitcake Company in Beatrice where he worked until his retirement in 1985.  He married Ruth E. Carstens on December 26, 1975. He was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice and the Beatrice Noon Sertoma Club.  He had been a member of Bitting-Norman Post #27 of the American Legion, Geddes-Thober Post #1077 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Aerie #531 and the Elks Lodge #619 all of Beatrice.  He had also been a member of Hidden Acres and enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, doing yard work and was an avid Husker fan.



                Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Beatrice; two sons, George (Donna) Lampe of Crete and Kevin Lampe and fiancée Angela Lehman all of Beatrice; two daughters, Tannis (Dave) Christ of Beatrice and Cathy (Ron) Shultz of Rockford; one step-son, Daryl  (Lorraine) McCown of Estes Park CO; one step-daughter, Karen (Steve) Baenziger of Lincoln;  ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald (Janice) Lampe of Beatrice; three sisters, Ruby Genrich and Janice Edeal and husband  Larry McKee  all of Beatrice and Shirley (Joseph)  Tarnowski of Franklin, Wisconsin;  three sisters-in-law, Lois Lampe of Beatrice, Virginia Lampe of Kansas, and Lois Lampe; numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Margarette Brouilliette Lampe; his first wife Leila, who died March 28, 1974; one son, Dan Lampe, who died October 6, 1987; infant sister; five brothers, Richard Lampe and wife Bernadine, Alvin Lampe, Don Lampe, Jimmy Lampe and wife Genny, Carl Lampe and first wife, Gloria and second wife, Eddie; two brothers-in-law, Herman Genrich and Jerry Edeal.



                Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice with Pastor Doyle Karst officiating.    Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice with graveside military rites conducted by Bitting-Norman Post #27 and the United States Navy.  In lieu of flowers, a  memorial is established to Bitting-Norman Post #27 of the American Legion.  The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home from 12:00 noon Sunday until time of service on Tuesday with the family meeting and greeting friends on Monday, September 4, 2017 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  www.foxfuneralhome.net.  Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
