William B. Owens

William B. Owens, 89, of Plymouth died unexpectedly at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln on Sunday, December 1, 2013. He was born on March 1, 1924 to George William and Zella Mae (DeLay) Owens at a farmstead outside of Slapout, OK. Bill married Verna Belle (Barnett) on September 23, 1947 in Perryton, TX after meeting a month and a half earlier and were married for 66 years, having three children: Darrel, Kay and Billy. He proudly served in the United States Navy (Seabee’s) from 1942-1946 during World War II in Okinawa. After leaving the Navy, he worked in Dumas, TX for Phillips 66, relocating with Phillips to the Beatrice area in 1967 and retiring in 1988 after 35 years. He was a member of the Schopp-Ewing-Nispel Post #243 of the American Legion of Plymouth. He was busy and healthy until his last day. He enjoyed visiting, camping and fishing with his friends, traveling and the outdoors. He also enjoyed working on John Deere Tractors or other projects. His greatest pride was in his family, including his three children, five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, Verna Belle of Plymouth; children, Darrel of Jansen, Diana (Kay) of Plymouth, William (Billy) D. and Michelle of Bruning; five grandchildren, Robin Nette Leseberg and Ted Shively of Beatrice, Tracy Wayne Owens and wife Lois of Spearfish, SD, Tammy Elaine Bonham of Fort Worth, TX, Shawn William Owens and wife Christie of Murray and Shelley Lynn Owens and husband Bryce of Palmyra; 14 great-grandchildren, Justin, Meagan, Hannah, Holden, Hayden, Zacharey, Maddison, Cade, Aubrey, Brayden, Ethan, Apollo, Logann and Odyn; one great-great-granddaughter, Paisley; brother, Leroy Owens and wife Francis of Lampasas, TX; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Zella DeLay Owens; sisters, Dorothy and husband Ed Hock, Eula and husband Oscar Kennick, Ola Ocheltree and Stella and Orville Ocheltree and granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Owens. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2013 at the Fox Funeral Home of Plymouth with Major Daniel Hursh officiating. The body has been cremated. There will be no viewing. A guestbook for signatures will be available at Fox Funeral Home of Plymouth from 9:00 A.M. Wednesday until time of services.
